This haiku has the prescript, "Eight Merits-Earning Water." This refers to a special pond in the Buddhist Paradise, the water of which contains eight beneficial properties. See Kogo dai jiten (Shogakukan 1983) 1333. By prefacing the haiku in this way, Issa hints that a pond is also part of the scene.
